Dear Friends,

Fund for Teachers has made it possible for me to embark on an unparallelled musical adventure this summer and I hope that you and your family will join me as I discover new things about our shared musical heritage.  The plan (right now) is to post daily from July 17-July 11 as I explore the musical roots of America.

The Route

While soaking in the scenery and the rich musical culture of all the places I visit along the way, my study will be focused in the Blue Ridge National Heritage Area where I will participate in two distinct but complementary music conferences.

Roots of American Music Conference – Mars Hill University  – I think it’s time for me to find my guitar calluses because while at this conference I’m going to enjoy small classes and individualized instruction on all sorts of regional folk music. (AND, I’m pretty sure I’ll have to perform…we’ll see…)

Traditional Song Week, Swannanoa Gathering – Warren Wilson College – This conference focuses on traditional singing styles and traditional song literature.
